MARNI McGEE

HISTORIES

THE WORLD IN ANCIENT TIMES is a collection of eight individual books that provide a truly global perspective to the study of ancient history. Each book in the series is written by a scholar of the ancient civilization paired with an experienced writer of nonfiction for young people. Through these little "writing marriages," Oxford University Press has created dynamic, lively volumes that are absolutely accurate and up-to-date. The authors were told:  "Don't make anything up, but make it read like fiction!"
Marni wrote THE ANCIENT ROMAN WORLD with Ronald Mellor, Professor of History at UCLA.  Every chapter comes alive with the ancient-but-still-speaking voices from the ancient world.  These books take the reader to vividly rendered cities, farms, and towns and into the daily rounds of the people who lived there. The characters whom we meet there are from all walks and stations of life -- from kings and  generals to common laborers, from philosophers to schoolboys and working girls.

Marni collaborated with Amanda Podany, Professor of History at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona to create the second volume:  THE ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN WORLD, featuring the rich civilizations of Mesopotamia, Syria, Israel and their neighbors. Even though these civilizations are even older than those featured in the Rome volume, this book is full of lively characters whose "voices" are still to be heard if we listen!

This 8-volume series includes teacher and student guides, all of which may be purchased from Oxford University Press.

DIEGO COLUMBUS, ADVENTURES ON THE HIGH SEAS is the only book written about the elder son of Christopher Columbus, a boy who was 12 years old at the time of his father's first voyage. Although it is historical fiction, it is based upon an astonishing body of fact. We know a great deal about Diego -- where he was and what he was doing as he father prepared to cross the Atlantic -- in search of the Far East! Fortunately, there are intriguing GAPS in what we know, and that's when the writing gets FUN!

DIEGO COLUMBUS, ADVENTURES ON THE HIGH SEAS asks -- and answers these questions:  If you were the son of Christopher Columbus and he was about to embark on his great voyage, what would you want to do?  (GO, of course.) And if you were Christopher, what would you say to your son?  (NO, of course.) This is Diego's story, a weaving of fact and fiction.

Published in 1992 by the Fleming H. Revell Company and by Weekly Reader Book Club.  Available from the author (see Contact Page) or through Amazon Used Books.
ANCIENT GREECE:  ARCHAEOLOGY UNLOCKS THE SECRETS OF GREECE'S PAST.

National Geographic Children's Books and Education Publishing Group, December 2006, one in a 4-book series.

From School Library Journal:  "These titles offer the beautiful photography and illustrations characteristic of the National Geographic Society, well-written texts and sidebars, and information on recent archaeological finds. The authors combine overview material on these cultures, interviews with working archaeologists, and "process" data about how archaeologists and other scientists handle present-day finds, and even finds long-past. . . [The Greek volume] introduces underwater archaeology in its treatment of two expeditions conducted by George Bass: the 1980s exploration of a ship that sank more than 3000 years ago as well as the exploration of a ship that sank about 400 BCE. . .  Beautifully produced, these books have the potential both to please readers already fascinated by the past but also to attract new fans to archaeology."
