HOW TO MAKE WINSTON'S WONDERFUL WORD HAT
1. Each child will need a gusset-type paper bag, perferably white but a brown grocery bag will work fine too. Approximate dimensions: 8.5" x 13.5" witih a 6" gussett.
2. Decorate the bag--front, back and sides--using a variety of things. Many possibilities.
a. Write words using brightly-colored magic markers.
b. Cut out words from magazines and/or newspapers.
c. Print out fancy, fun words -- your own ideas or words from WINSTON THE BOOK
WOLF--on colored paper. Let the children cut them out and paste them onto the bags.
d. Attach decorative stickers, stars, foam die-cut letters from the craft store, or whatever else you think of.
e. Use any of the above in combinations of your choice, to suit the kids and the supplies on hand.
3. Crunch and roll up the bottom edge of the bag to create a rounded brim.
4. Create a "hatband" with 35" of heavy yarn -- or even 72" to twist it double -- and tie it in a bow at the side.
5. Draw an 8 to 10-inch "feather" on white paper. Write in bold letters: WORDS
BOOKS--
YUM!
6. Duplicate on brightly colored construction paper, perhaps the same color as the yarn.
Allow a little stub at the bottom to tuck into the crunchie brim.
7. Let the children cut out their feathers. Tuck into brim and glue or staple.
8. Crush the top of the bag to give it a nice hat-ly shape.
9. Tighten the yarn to make the hat fit just right.
10. Have fun.
