Marni McGee grew up in North Carolina in a home full of books, music,
and laughter. Many of her stories are drawn from the well of her
childhood memories and family stories. She went to Agnes Scott College,
a
private women's college in Georgia then transferred to the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she graduated with "Highest
Honors in English." Then she went to Yale Divinity School, where she
earned a Masters of Arts in Religion degree. While at Yale, she met her
husband, Sears, who was in the graduate school of history. They married
in 1966 and were soon on their way to England where Marni taught at the
American School of London.
After living in London for two years, Marni and Sears moved first to
Statesboro, Georgia and then to the University of California in Santa
Barbara where he teaches history. The McGees have two children who are now
grown and married, with children of their own. The next page shows some more family pictures, including pictures of the "Grands" -- Kai Gray McGee, Benton Ray Min, and Nami Elizabeth McGee.
Marni's
career as a children's book writer began as entertainment for her own
children but quickly became a passion and a great source of joy for
her. Though she has had a number of jobs (in churches, medical offices and schools), Marni claims only one profession: "Writing for
children is the highest honor and privilege that I can imagine.
Children deserve the very best we can give them."
