MARNI McGEE
About StoryFaire
StoryFaire began in the summer of 2006 when Marni approached the directors of Storyteller Children's Center about combining the launch of WINSTON THE BOOK WOLF with a fund raiser to benefit Storyteller. Their enthusiastic response led to the creation of StoryFaire -- a party for little kids, a book launch and signing, and a benefit for the homeless and at-risk children who are served by Storyteller Children's Center.

Each year Storyteller provides free, high-quality early childhood education to more than 100 homeless and at-risk children. These children live in shelters, cars, substandard housing.  But now, in two locations, Storyteller is well equipped to meet their needs in a safe, loving environment. Their families receive comprehensive support services as well. It's a great day for a great cause!

And by the way, that charming Granny Winston is my husband, Sears. . . aka J. Sears McGee, professor of History at UCSB.

Author Bruce Hale was one of our performers in 2008.  He is the author of many books for children, including SNORING BEAUTY and his popular CHET GECKO series.  Other dynamic authors were Alexis O'Neill (LOUD EMILY & THE RECESS QUEEN), Joe Cepeda (THE SWING & THE OLD MAN AND HIS DOOR),  Carol Heyer (HUMPHREY'S FIRST CHRISTMAS &  ONCE UPON A COOL MOTORCYCLE DUDE), Barbara Jean Hicks (JITTERBUG JAM & THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER KITTY), and Marni McGee (SILLY GOOSE & THE COLT AND THE KING).

Featured authors in 2007 were Mary Hanson (HOW TO SAVE YOUR TAIL & SNUG), Ellen A. Kelley (MY LIFE AS A CHICKEN & BUCKAMOO GIRLS), Valerie Hobbs (DEFIANCE & TENDER) and Marni McGee (WINSTON THE BOOK WOLF & WHILE ANGELS WATCH).

GWEN DANDRIDGE watches the fun, sitting beside her husband, Prof. Josh Schimel -- aka "The Fox." Gwen and her mother, Dorothy Stager, made the amazing costumes worn by Fox and Goose. They also made pillows and stuffed animals for the Silent Auction.

In addition to the auction, StoryFaire features free ice cream, popcorn, helium balloons, raffle baskets, author presentations, book signing, music, plus arts and crafts for children.

City Councilman Grant House is a great supporter of Storyteller Children's Center and, as our Emcee, has become the "Spirit of StoryFaire. The children of all ages are entranced by his costume -- and his evident love!

All Saints-by-the-Sea has offered its campus as the StoryFaire site.

Chaucer's is our bookstore sponsor -- providing the books, handling sales, and donating 20% of the proceeds to the cause.

STORYFAIRE 2009 was held on April 26th at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. It was a great success and lots of fun!  Attendance is growing. .

In 2010, it will be held on April 25th. It's always the fourth Sunday of the fourth month. Plan to come and   bring a small pal or two. . . or three.
